Jack shick lord howe island birds m

I’m a fifth generation Islander with my family roots going back to the Thompson family who arrived here in 1853. I have spent most of my life living on the Island.

Can’t Find the bird you saw, quick browse here

I’m not sure when I first got into birds, I guess it’s osmosis living in nature all the time. My Dad Ray Shick has a very keen interest in wildlife and botany. As teenagers he would take us out banding Flesh-footed Shearwaters, not the normal activities for young teenagers but we did have fun. My job was to hold the bird while a band was fitted (they bite and scratch really hard.) The Shearwaters breed on Lord Howe Island each year and then migrate half way around the world and return. I first picked up a camera when I was around ten, bought my first SLR at 18 and have been hooked ever since. Digital has made wildlife photography boom. It doesn’t cost you to push the delete button!!

All my pictures you see in this website have been taken with digital cameras over the last 7 years, I use a Canon 30d, 40d and 7d and most shots of birds with either a Canon 400L f5.6 or Canon70-200L f2.8 lens.

My wife, Cindy and I operate “Sea to Summit Expeditions” running regular sea bird trips around Lord Howe Island on MV “Noctiluca”.

The scientific information comes from the books; Albatrosses, Petrels and Shearwaters of the world by Derek Onley & Paul Scofild, Field Guide to the Birds of Australia by Simpson & Day, A Field Guide to the Birds of Lord Howe Island by Ian Hutton.

Also a thanks to Hank Bower of the Lord Howe Island Board for encouraging me to do this website. I want this website to be a photographic essay of one of my passions, Birds of Lord Howe Island. I hope you enjoy this site Jack Shick.
